Do you have to have an E.I.N. to sell retail products?

I am a Massage Therapist in the state of Michigan and interested in selling retail products at the Chiropractor’s office that I work out of. Is it necessary to have a registered business name and an E.I.N. in order to purchase wholesale and sell retail products?

EIN and TIN or Tax ID Number are the same thing. In Michigan you have to pay sales tax on merchandise you sell. The method by which you declare your sales and pay the tax is through your Tax ID Number. You have to get one.

Also a wholesaler won’t sell products to you wholesale without one because that would be considered retail, and they would have to pay the tax on the sale. So you have two reasons to get one.
