A common question among cat owners. Besides the mess it creates that someone has to clean up you have to wonder how comfortable it is for your feline friend. Is there a way to prevent or cut down on the amount of hairballs your furry friend has?
Hairballs in their most basic form are just a lot of hair that has been swallowed by your cat during grooming.
Hairballs among cats can be mild to extremely painful. The symptoms range from light coughing, vomiting, constipation, loss of appetite and in rare extreme cases could require surgery to successfully remove a stubborn hairball.
So how can we as cat owners help them have fewer or zero hairballs? The first thing to try is to change their diet. There are many cat foods on the market that claim to help reduce or eliminate hairballs. When shopping for cat foods look for the ones that have a hairball formula it should be listed clearly on the bag.
Another option is to get rid of the main ingredient that causes hairballs – the hair. to accomplish this you need to brush your cat daily. For cats with short hair you need to use a rubber brush. If you cat has long hair use a comb that has wide teeth. Another option you could try is a lint roller. Just roll it over your cat daily. My cat loves it. I guess it feels more like a massage.
Another option to try as a natural home remedy is petroleum jelly. You can mix a little of this with your loved ones food. If you mix about 1 teaspoon for every 10 pounds that should do the trick.
These suggestion should help you reduce if not eliminate any future hairballs your cat may have. I hope I have completely answered the question I started with. Why do cats cough up hairballs?
